There is no general consensus on what causes autism. Most researchers today believe that autism is the result of a combination of factors that come together to create a kind of system overload, a tipping point, in a genetically predisposed child’s development.
A wide range of variables have been implicated in autism, including the age of the parents, stress, viruses in the stomach, immune deficiencies and inherited chromosomal anomalies. The bottom line is that it is likely that the group of behaviors that we refer to as “autism” consists of a variety of different disorders the origins of which have yet to be determined.
